Causes of the university student abandonment in the distance modality in the city of Loja-Ecuador

University student abandonment is a serious problem due to the effects it has on society and on a personal level, a situation that possibly occurs with greater intensity in the Open and Distance Learning Modality -MAD-. Facing with this problem, the research Causes of university student abandonment in the Distance Learning Modality in the city of Loja-Ecuador was raised. The general objective was to determine the causes of early student abandonment in the Open and Distance Modality of the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja, by means of a sectional-transversal study, with the purpose of collecting information for later proposals of strengthening the MAD in the matter of student retention. For this purpose, the model of observed factors and sectional-transversal information was considered, applying the survey to a sample of 2,002 university students enrolled nationally in the MAD, via e-mails and telephone calls. The results revealed three main causes of student dropout: lack of time to study (25.4%), tuition costs (19.5%), and assessment methods (7.8%). In addition, university student dropout in Open and Distance Modality is multi-causal.
